Health and wellness programs are a multi-million dollar industry. As a culture we love to be given quick, easy methods to improve our lives. A wellness program often feels like the ideal solution. However, these short cuts do not work long term. Most people who lose weight on a three month workout binge end up gaining it back. We spend money on short term programs only to slip back into our old ways. It takes more than 21 days to build a habit that lasts a lifetime.
The truth that there is no program that will work for everyone. The only way to change your life is to do the long hard job of understanding yourself. Ask what led to the bad habits you want to break and what's holding you back from healthy living. What if the best decision you can make for your health is to learn to trust your instincts?
None of us really want to lean on our intuition. It's much easier to pay an expert to tell us exactly how to live. However, learning to embrace intuitive health can set you free from dieting. It can set you free from the slavery of ongoing dissatisfaction with your life and the way you feel. A wellness program might make you feel in control, but it can't resolve the internal processes that got you where you are.
Today I challenge you to pay attention to the habits that fill your time and look for the deeper root of them. What makes you pick up your phone to fill the quiet moments? Why do you continually procrastinate? Are you really hungry? Take inventory of the habits that are beneficial to you and the ones that you would like to change.
