In Standing Office Desk

Fewer and fewer people are doing what’s classified as “heavy work” in the United States. That’s work that is physically taxing, requiring you to exert a great deal of energy throughout your day. The majority of us are working at desk jobs where we’re sedentary for 8, 9 or even 10 hours a day. All that sitting still and staring at a computer screen isn’t doing us any good. In fact, it could be doing us a great deal of harm. Scientists are taking a look at our sedentary lifestyles and seeing the impact it’s having on our health and how a standing office desk could help undo some of the damage.

How Your Desk Job is Impacting Your Health

  • Scientific American published an article in November of 2014 about how desk jobs can ruin your health. They report that in “18 studies reported during the past 16 years, covering 800,000 people overall,” that chairs are proving to be lethal. The effects of sitting too much include slower metabolism, increased risk of heart disease and stroke, obesity and more.
  • The Washington Post reports in 2013 that “desk jobs can be killers, literally.” They spoke with researchers at the world-famous Mayo client who were researching the link between sitting down too much and premature death. They also found that even if you go to the gym, sitting the rest of the day could be having a negative impact on your health.
  • The New Scientist brought us some good news in their article in July of 2016, though. They report that research shows that being active for an hour a day can help counteract the negative impact of sitting at a desk all day. They note that “those who sat for more than eight hours a day without doing exercise were up to 60 per cent more likely to die prematurely.” That’s enough to get anyone up and moving.
  • Science Daily backs up all of these findings in their article published in March of 2017. They report that research done at Warwick Medical School found that those working a desk job “have bigger waists and increased risk of heart disease.” Their advice was “to sit less and be more active; as much as seven hours a day on your feet.”

What You Can Do To Counteract Your Sedentary Desk Job

The consensus from the scientific community is clear: sitting is bad for us. That’s why so many office workers are looking for solutions that can help them get back up on their feet while they continue to do their jobs. That’s where a standing office desk comes in. A standing desk is the perfect way to continue doing the job that you love and depend on without sacrificing your own health to do it. A good standing desk should make it easy to work on your computer while staying on your feet, keeping ergonomics in mind so you are as comfortable as possible while you get things done.
